Conures

Feral Conures

Lineolated Parakeet

From  South and Central America this 6 inch bird is a joy to own. Most Linnies, as we call them, are friendly, easy keepers in both the breeding situation and as pets. A nicer bird you could not ask for.

The Lineolated is also known as
the Barred Parakeet

There are two sub species
1. Bolborhynchus lineola lineola
2. Bolborhynchus lineola tigrinus

normal green

They come in colors (Mutations);  Green (Normal or wild color) Turquoise, Cobalt, Mauve, Olive and Cremino. There is no blue in the Lineolated as a result there is no Albino. The genetics is simple recessive except for the Cremino which is sex linked.

A technical description can be seen in the Lexicon of Parrots

Lineolateds are dimorphic by the tail and wing shoulder markings. However if you do not have a keen eye feather sexing is recommended.

Nesting is easily attained. With clutches of 4 to 6 hatching in 18 to 20 days and fledging in 5 to 6 weeks. They are generally great parents and can fledge their own easily. If a pet is to had from a clutch I would take it at 7 to 8 weeks and handle it. They seldom bite. They are non-destructive, quiet, attractive small birds.

cobalt mutation

Life span is approximately 10 years and breeding occur in about 6 of those 10 years. Sexual maturity starts at 5 to 6 months of age but to prevent egg binding is best not to introduce the mate until a year of age.

Lineolateds can be flock bred but breeders who like to keep lineage separated and recorded do not practice flock breeding.

mauve mutation

I will get a lot of arguments on this but I have seen and own both American and Imported birds I prefer European birds.  They are bigger and bulkier and have great feather conditioning. They are also not quite as flighty as the American birds that I have seen.

Understand this may just be something that has occurred in my Aviary alone.

Diet is the good quality Parakeet seed, apples, corn on the cob, wheat bread, cooked bean mix and egg food.  A quality spray millet and all sorts of veggies can be offered to see what your bird(s) will eat.

To me Lineolateds have yet to reach their peak popularity here in America. But when they do they will become the best little birds that anyone can own.
